Picking an Instrument

All Teledyne Hastings mass flow controllers and meters are configured for your specific conditions to give an easy-to-use flow instrument that provides an accurate flow measurement. To see available options, refer to the back section of each product bulletins. Some basic considerations when choosing a flow instrument include:

  • Full Scale Range and Gas Type
  • Reference Conditions (Temperature & Pressure)
  • Upstream & Downstream Pressure (Only applicable to Flow Controllers)
  • Analog or digital communications

While there are additional factors that should also be considered, such as communication, pressure drop and ambient temperature, these three factors are a great place to start when determining which flow instrument is suited to your application.

If you need help converting mass flow into volumetric flow or converting it into different units, then Teledyne Hastings has developed a thermal mass flow calculator tto help determine your new flow rate. In standardized volumetric flow units (sccm, slm, scfm,), the reference conditions, or “STP" temperature and pressure, define the amount of gas by determining the number of molecules using the Ideal Gas Law. In many cases, the selected reference conditions are 0°C & 760 Torr. However, other reference conditions are also used, such as 25°C & 760 Torr, or 70°F & 760 Torr.

Example Order for a Thermal Flow Meter:

Frequently Asked Questions

What’s the difference between a thermal mass flow controller and mass flow meter?

A thermal mass flow meter measures flow using a thermal flow sensor that measures the thermal dispersion between two thermocouples but does not include a proportional control valve and does not control gas flow. While a thermal mass flow controller will BOTH measure and control gas flow, according to a command signal (setpoint).

The mass flow controller uses the thermal dispersion measured from the thermocouples to determine the flow rate. For accurate flow control, the controller measures and adjusts the gas flow using a precise, proportional control valve to maintain stable control of the flow rate based on the readings from the heated sensor.

What does a thermal mass flow controller do?

Mass flow controllers are instruments that measure and control the flow of gas in reference to a specified flow rate. When adjustments in gas flow are required to maintain that rate, the feedback from the sensor is used to create an electronic signal to send to a control valve. Teledyne Hastings uses thermocouple technology to measure the thermal dispersion of the gas. A controller is calibrated for the flow range over-which they maintain control. A controller is often used for process control when accurate measurement and flow control over a process is required.

Are thermal mass flow meters gas specific?

Thermal mass flow meters are built for a user’s specific operating conditions. Teledyne Hastings' thermal flow meters use thermal dispersion technology (Thermocouples), so measurements are gas specific. This is due to the heat conductivity of each gas being different resulting in different amounts of thermal dispersion. For example, there would be a difference in heat conductivity between natural gas vs compressed air. Our controllers are built to cover a user's flow range, upstream & downstream pressure conditions and gas type.

What does SCCM stand for?

SCCM stands for Standard Cubic Centimeters per Minute. This is a unit of measure for volumetric flow that can measure the flow range. In standardized volumetric flow units, the reference conditions, or “STP" temperature and pressure, define the amount of gas by determining the number of gas molecules using the Ideal Gas Law.
